The YES team are now a month into our dryland training for the upcoming winter, and we thought it was time to share some awesome fitness tips with you all. If you want to make the most of your time in the snow, it really pays to do a little prep before you get here. Switching off already? Don't go – if you're thinking that sounds like a lot of hard work, the good news is that this program takes less than 20 minutes! If you can manage that a few times a week you'll really feel the benefit. You don't HAVE to workout before your trip, but being in the right shape for skiing or boarding will not only allow you to enjoy your trip more (and improve more!) but importantly helps to prevent injuries. And it’s not just for skiers, these exercises are targettted for boarders too!
We are committed to helping you to make the most of your program, so we are very excited to be able to share with you the awesome SKIRAD (Ski Ready and Avoid Damage) program.
SKIRAD was developed by some amazing local physiotherapists here in Whistler (they are the official physios of the Canadian Ski Cross team and have worked with other Canadian and Australian olympians). This program was developed for Whistler Blackcomb Snow School for all of their instructors. It focuses on how to build good form to reduce your chance of injury. These physios don't want you to be their next patient!
There are also videos to help you understand the exercises. It’s good to work out along with the videos to start to keep you moving at the right pace. The full set takes less than 20 minutes and doesn't require any equipment.
Once you learn the exercises the first set can also be used as a great warm up before you hit the slopes.
Once you have done that, move onto the core and leg workouts:
Looking forward to seeing you in great shape on the slopes!

As some of the YES Crew had been biking since Febraury, it was only fitting that the end of season YES Adventure would be a bike ride down the Sea-to-Sky Trail. Starting in Whistler, 50km later we would arrive in Squamish with our tour guides, Rob and PJ leading the way. (Well Brackendale really but that's close enough.) The crew met at Olive's in Function Junction to get last minute gels etc. Then it was off to the trail-head in Cheakamus. A beautiful winding trail that passed through the forest with beautiful views along the way brought us through Cal-Check and over a suspension bridge – where PJ almost bounced half of his staff into the river – before arriving at Brandywine. Then it was a small section of highway before stopping at Chez Linc for a quick fuel stop and water top-up.
Which way to Squamish?

A beautiful section of trail brought us downhill past Shadow Lake before ending up at the Powder Mountain turn-off. From there it was a brutal climb half way up the canyon into killer a headwind. Luckily the punishment didn't last too long before we turned off the highway to rest up at the Tantalus Range view point. After taking in the views it was time to get back on the trail. A nice descent over varying terrain, and some loose rocks cooled us down after the long climb. A hike-a-bike section over the rail tracks and then it was off past Starvation Lake before popping out in Paradise Valley. From there is was quite the slog on a mixture of fireroads, gravel road and finally back onto the blacktop. Roughly 15km of flat, into a killer headwind, until our final destination. Jaron was a machine leading the pace as the group split up on the run home.

The WaterShed was a welcome sight as some weary bones were in need of some hydration. Once the last of the crew arrived we unanimously gave out the sore saddle award. We won't mention the name of the guy that won, but needless to say, that guy needed some ice. That guy also needed a inflatable doughnut and that guy wasn't really able to sit down for the whole afternoon. Poor guy, who shall remain nameless of course. The crew quickly got hydrated through a combination of beer-garitas and buckets of Coronas. Apparently we actually drank them out of Coronas and Triple Sec. Great work gang! Another great adventure to wrap up a good season on the slopes. Can't wait for the next adventure…….stay tuned.

It's Beer-garita time!!!

Here we are on the last day of another amazing season for YES, and the snow is falling in the village again as I write. Crazy considering we were all sunbathing in 23C last Saturday!
Today is also the final day of our BASI course for this year, and we look forward to their successful BASI level 2 certification this afternoon. Next year we will be offering the BASI course as a stand alone 2 week course in addition to including it in the regular 11 week course starting Feb 13. We also have a few candidates going for their CSIA level 3 exam next week so good luck to them!
We’ve had so many awesome guests joining us this winter both in Whistler and Niseko, in fact we’ve had a record number of guests come back for more than one visit in a season! Once you get hooked you just can’t get enough…
We also had the pleasure of coaching a fantastic group of Instructor Program guests this winter, achieving more than 300 certifications! We hope all our newly qualified instructors will go on to great success whether in the snow industry or back at home in their studies or careers. Thanks to all our hardworking pros who put so much into helping all our guests fulfill their dreams.
Looking forward to seeing you all again soon, in Wanaka, Whistler, Niseko or Europe!
